3 reasons why you can’t maintain your weight
There are a few reasons why you may struggle to maintain your body weight but we have broken it down to give you are top 3 reasons why you can’t.
You achieved your current weight as a result of dieting which has caused a drop in metabolic rate due to metabolic adaptation. If you are unable to maintain the current level of calorie intake that allowed you to become this weight then your weight will naturally go up as your calorie intake also increases.
You have been prepping for a fitness event and have now finished the event. You notice your weight increasing, but why? Having been doing 7-10 hours of running and exercise every week in preparation for the fitness event (say a marathon) you have now gone back to 2-3 hours of exercise a week. Due to this reduction in energy expenditure through exercise, unless you have subsequently reduced your calorie intake, it is likely that you will gain weight as a result.
Stress/environment. While this is a bit more complicated, say for example you have started a new job and have found this particularly challenging the last week. You have had less time to prepare your normal packed lunch and have therefore started grabbing food on the go. At the office there is a little kitchen where there is always a supply of chocolate, biscuits and sweet treats. You are not normally a snacker, but between the increase in stress, the increase in workload and the reduction in sleep you find yourself needed more energy later in the day. You turn to some biscuits and sweets as a pick me up. Having finished work you normally head to the gym, but keen to make a good impression at the start and the increasing workload and subsequent sugar crash making you even more lethargic, you give that gym session another miss and head home. You forgot to do your normal weekly shop so you order from Deliveroo and accompany it with a glass of wine. You see before you know it you have replaced your healthy habits with new unhealthy ones and the combination of an increase in stress and a new environment has led you to put on fat despite you never normally needing to diet.
This last point isn’t to stress you out or to put a downer on a new job promotion or new challenges. It is just showing you how quickly your can start to pick up bad habits and how quickly those can lead to negative changes in your weight and health.
